I decided to read and remix chapter 6 in the Bedford Books of Genres for my blog #7. Chapter 6 talks about viewing sources critically and evaluating them for your purpose. It talks about asking questions about your potential sources such as rhetorical situation, purpose, medium, and audience. The authors emphasized the importance of these questions and how they can affect your overall papers’ credibility. They also mentioned making sure that your source is relevant to your paper’s topic.
Overall, I felt that all three of the chapters in the Bedford Book of Genres about sources and how to collect them was relatively redundant. I do not feel as though I learned anything from reading chapter 6. It all seemed pretty straight forward. Obviously, you need sources that pertain to your subject. Obviously, they need to be scholarly sources. Obviously, they should support your overall thesis. All these facts are shoved down our throats in high school and college. Reiterating this was painful to read and just tiring to absorb. The whole time I was sitting there saying to myself “I know, I know, I know.” I feel as though they could have left chapter 6 out.
