ENC 2135-15

7 February 2018

Consider the lobster took a wild turn and I loved that. David Foster Wallace started off by explaining the community around the lobster festival and how implemented the whole lobster market is within that community. Then he took a sharp turn and basically spent the rest of the article saying why it is wrong or at least inhumane to prepare lobsters the way we do now. This had an amazing effect on me and the reason this is powerful is because I am not one to normally side with environmental or animal abuse folks. I mean the people that use terms like “Meat is Murder” not just regular animal abuse campaigns, just to clarify. However, I agree with Wallace because he convinced me of his point.

The only issues I found with this article were that there seemed to be an excess amount of backstory details. I believe about a fourth of this article could be thrown out if some of these types of details were gotten rid of. Also, there were moments of informality in Wallace’s word choices. For example, “…causing some cooks to leave the kitchen altogether and to take one of those little light-weight plastic oven timers with them into another room and wait until the whole process is over.” The use of the phrase “little light-weight” really diminishes the authors ethos in just one sentence.
